The Divine Paradox of Wealth

The Law of Lakshmi: Why Giving is the Key to Receiving More

Many have just celebrated the festival of Deepavali and are returning to their office and workspaces. To make it more meaningful and reflect on what is the law of Lakshmi, let’s ruminate a bit. Also we have heard about the #law of #attraction, let’s see how it plays out in our culture and traditions.

For many, wealth is viewed as a static asset to be acquired and secured. Growth is to be achieved through SIP’s or mutual funds or due to fluctuating geo-political and trade tarrifs, Sovereign gold bonds etc., However, spiritual traditions offer a more dynamic perspective. As articulated by Swami Tejomayananda, former Head of Chinmaya Mission Global, the true Law of Lakshmi (the Hindu goddess of fortune and prosperity) is not accumulation, but circulation.

The core message presents a profound paradox: “to ensure the continued flow of prosperity, one must become a channel, not a container.”

The Flow Stops When the Hand Closes

Swamiji reveals, that the act of withholding is a silent statement to the universe. If an individual is solely focused on their own needs and “don’t give to anyone else,” the source of wealth views the current supply as fully sufficient for that person’s immediate requirements. The wealth stops accumulating because the personal need has been fulfilled, and there is no impetus for a greater flow.

The Supply Increases for the Generous

The dynamic shifts entirely for the person who actively “gives to others.” The Lord, recognizing the need to support and sustain the charitable action, ensures that “supply must be there so that he can go on giving more” [00:21]. The act of selfless giving creates a need for continuous receiving, thus ensuring the ongoing presence of Lakshmi.

Conclusion

The lesson is clear: “true prosperity is not about what we keep, but what we move through our lives. To attract more, one must first be generous with what they have.”
